On June 12, 1976, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), headed by then Julio Cardinal Rosales, raised the honors of the church, when on their semi-annual assembly in Baguio declared the parish church of Our Lady of Fatima in Valenzuela a National Shrine. The great honor imposed a greater responsibility, for the parish must lead in spreading the urgent message exhorted by Our Lady in 1917. This was a signal honor to the parish, a strong moral booster to a community faced with such a herculean challenge, but with its own corresponding responsibility for it bestowed on the young parish the task of leading the promotion of the devotion to Our Lady of Fatima.
Tourist Site and Pilgrim Church
Due to the increasing prestige of the National Shrine during that time, on April 24, 1982 and December 10, 1982, Tourism Minister Jose D. Aspiras declared it as a Pilgrim Church and Tourist Site, respectively. During the Jubilee Year celebration in 2000 and the Year of the Holy Rosary in 2002 to 2003, the National Shrine was among the designated pilgrim churches in the Diocese of Malolos. It also hosted several diocesan Marian celebrations such as the Diocesan Marian Pilgrimage on May 13, 2006, a Marian Year and on the dawn of January 5, 2008 which gathered thousands of Marian devotees in the diocese and around the country
Center of the Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in the Philippines
The World Apostolate of Fatima (WAF) National Center is also located at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. This organization is a Public International Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right established by the Holy See on October 7, 2005. It is also a movement of the Church with millions of members all around the world who follow the requests made by Our Lady to the three children in 1917. In 1989, the delegates to the national convention of the WAF held in Cebu City unanimously approved the transfer of the National Center of the WAF to the National Shrine. Its affiliate organizations are the Youth Apostolate of Fatima (YAF) and Children Apostolate of Fatima (CAF).
Home of the National Pilgrim Image (NPI) of Our Lady of Fatima
The National Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima is one of the original statues blessed by Pope Paul VI and was later brought to the Philippines and crowned as the National Pilgrim Image during the launching of the National Marian Year in December 1984. It was subsequently entrusted to Bahay Maria for care and protection until it was permanently handed to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on October 17, 1999. The Pilgrim Image was the forefront of the “EDSA People Power Revolution” in 1986 where Our Lady, through the image, showed her maternal protection to our people. This is the reason why the image of Our Lady of Fatima is considered as the universal image of peace. During the solemn rites of her turn-over to the National Shrine, the signing of an “Agreement for Acceptance of Responsibility for Care and Protection” was also made. Since then, the image has been a witness of numerous note-worthy events which shaped the history of the Church and the society.
Almost five decades since its establishment, people from different parishes and even dioceses continue to come, in leaps and bounds, to feel the solace, find comfort and direction, and experience peace as they pray, celebrate, and serve God. The National Shrine will never be what it is today, a Shrine of Peace, if not through that generous efforts and services rendered by many people in the past years. This community prays that the Lord Jesus Christ, through Our Lady of Fatima, will continue to transform this piece of land as a mirror of His face, of compassion, piety, and love, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother and companion in our journey.
